A Brief History of Father’s Day
The tradition of Father’s Day dates back to 1910 when Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, sought to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children as a single parent. Inspired by the newly established Mother’s Day, Dodd advocated for a similar day to recognize fathers. The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910. However, it wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon signed legislation making Father’s Day a permanent national holiday in the United States.
